Irrigation -- This field has been conventionally tilled for years and has very little organic matter left. Such a small amount of residue would not help the soil microorganisms very much. Individuals that are used to seeing clean fields do not see the benefit to large quantities of residue on the surface. The only way to truely appreciate the benefits of residue management is to compare the results on well managed fields to those of conventionally tilled fields.
